Most of my free time today (which mostly happens here at the newspaper anymore, since we get so few ads these days--but believe me, I am not complaining!) was spent figuring out how to get past a tricky webdesign quandary dealing with the disparate way that IE and Gecko-based browsers render the CSS {background-attachment: fixed;} property. I seriously want to beat in the heads of every person working on browser software right now for these inconpatibility issues. The W3C has issued the standard, so why can't you fucking retards just program your shit to USE THEM THE WAY THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE USED?!
But today's big quandary revolves around an even stranger disparity: $15.85 worth of one. When I was attempting to reconcile my Microsoft Money-kept checkbook with the account info downloaded from my bank (National City), I discovered that I was nearly $7.00 overdrawn--according to my records, that is. However, the bank statement told me I was still well in the clear. Could my records be wrong? Certainly. So I checked. I printed out my bank statement and checked off each and every amount on the statement that I found recorded in my Money register.
Check it out: The withdrawals and deposits listed both in my register and in my statement downloaded from the bank match up perfectly, one-to-one. But, according to my bank statement, I have more money in my account than I can account for. $15.85, to be precise.
Fucking National City. This is the third account I've had with them over the years. I still share one with my mother for emergencies, and I used to have a different account a year or so ago that I had to close because they fucked the balance info up so bad no one could straighten it out. Now, it looks like the same kind of bullshit is happening to this account. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow so maybe they can track down where this "extra" money came from. Idaknow...maybe somehow my free checking account got mysteriously upgraded to an interest checking account. It could happen. But something tells me there's just some kind of Fehler im System which is probably going to snowball just like the last one did and eventually lead to me closing this account, as well. If that happens, believe you me, I am going to shred National City: close out all my accounts there, empty my safe-deposit box, and give them the middle finger in extremis as I take my business permanently elsewhere.
(BTW, if anyone can identify the Peter Schilling reference in the above post, I'll give you a cookie.)
