Onward Christian Soldiers

This article from Salon.com, an except from Michelle Goldberg's forthcoming book Kingdom Coming: The Rose of Christian Nationalism is positively disturbing. As many of you know, I am quite opposed to religions in general, and Christianity in particular--but I would never countenance, formally or even informally, ANY sort of governmental or societal movement, structure, or impulse that would seek to impose my opinions regarding religion on anyone else. The separation of church and state implies that not only is the government protected from undue influence from churches, but churches are, in turn, protected from undue influence of the government. But Christian nationalism, generally typified by so-called "dominion theology", is so absolutely opposed to that division and it disgusts me. Consider what a fella named George Grant, the former executive director of fundamentalist demagogue/blowhard D. James Kennedy's Coral Ridge Ministries, had to say in one of his books:

Christians have an obligation, a mandate, a commission, a holy responsibility to reclaim the land for Jesus Christ -- to have dominion in civil structures, just as in every other aspect of life and godliness.

But it is dominion we are after. Not just a voice.

It is dominion we are after. Not just influence.

It is dominion we are after. Not just equal time.

It is dominion we are after.

World conquest. That's what Christ has commissioned us to accomplish. We must win the world with the power of the Gospel. And we must never settle for anything less...

Thus, Christian politics has as its primary intent the conquest of the land -- of men, families, institutions, bureaucracies, courts, and governments for the Kingdom of Christ.

Wow. That's positively Hitlerific! Now, you may very well say: "Sure, that guy's a kook...but he's not representative of the vast majority of people in this country, and it's not like he's in a position of power."

But a fellow espouser of dominion theology and Christian nationalism is a guy by the name of Charles Colson. Yes. That Dr. Charles Colson, the head of Focus on the Family...and a personal friend/unofficial advisor to the Bush Administration.

These are the people who are slowly, progressively taking over the Republican Party and turning it into a fascist "Christian" party. Of course I oppose them. I'd like to see their heads on stakes. But atheists like me, and American Jews, American Muslims, Buddhists, Unitarians, and so forth are NOT the people who should be standing up to oppose these maniacs. Christians who do not fall for this line need to stand up against these people who are sullying their otherwise good name and filthying the name of Christianity more than anyone else has since the Middle Ages. Liberal and moderate Christians need to mobilize here and resist these fundamentalist bastards, because, quite frankly, liberal and moderate Christians are those who have the most to lose when they wake up one morning and discover the government they created by allowing "fellow Christians" to persuade their votes has now outlawed their denominations or is spying on them because they don't espouse the dominionist party line. Me? I'll just be wearing my Guy Fawkes mask, blowing up governmental buildings, churches, and monuments with fertilizer bombs.
