I wasn't that fond of Coldplay's first album. As a matter of fact, except for "The Scientist" and "Clocks," I don't even remember any of the other songs. It was a boring album. I liked it for about a week because...well, it was Britpop with lots of pianos and sounded real emo-ish at times, and gods know I love that kind of stuff; but after a while, I quickly realized every song prettymuch sounded alike and it bored me. No staying power.
In fact, just yesterday, aRvin and I were talking about how bland Coldplay is. aRvin quoted Thom Yorke of Radiohead in declaring them "lifestyle music"--simple, bland, unoffensive and thoroughly unremarkable music that's more often than not connected (via ads, movie trailers, etc.) to the simple, bland, unoffensive and thoroughly unremarkable mainstream lifestyle.
I've finally heard their new album, X & Y, however...and Jesus H. Christ, it's fucking GOOD. Yeah, it's simple, unoffensive, and not particularly inventive...but it's just damned good Britrock with lots of cool melodies, strong songwriting, and excellent production.
Except for the song "Talk," whose guitar line is NOTE FOR NOTE a replay of the main melody hook from the version of "Computerlove" on Kraftwerk's The Mix. That's just...weird. I mean, they literally ripped off that melody line. Completely.
