Coolest Myth Site EVAR
Feb. 3rd, 2006 01:33 pmThe Obakemono Project is a dictionary of all the mythical and weird beasts of Japanese folklore, mythology, and craziness. The illustrations are BEAUTIFUL, and...well, the content is positively fascinating. We all know that contemporary Japanese pop culture is absolutely insane--but what a surprise it was to discover much of that craziness extends into the remote past as well! Makes sense, though. After all, it has to start somewhere.
Perhaps the craziest "monster" of Japanese lore is the abumiguchi...which is a little muppet-like thing that evolves from the stirrups of a dead warrior's horse-tack, and then...Idaknow, just kind of lies around waiting for its master to rise from the dead or something. I personally file that one under "World's Most Useless Supernatural Creature." But what an idea, nonetheless!
