DEVO.
Oh, gods, was that show amazing. Who'd've thought a bunch of guys old enough to be my dad(s) could rock so damned hard....As is the only the second time I've ever seen them, I can only compare tonight's show to their performance at Devopallooza back in 1997, but I must say tonight had a lot more energy. Mind you, they kicked my ass senseless at Devopallooza '97, but tonight the venue was smaller, I was much closer to the band (with
lyssabard and
tlttlotd), and though their set was shorter than in '97--about an hour and some minutes--it was still friggin' incredible and actually covered a lot more of their catalogue than the '97 show did. They opened again with the usual General Boy introductory film, and came out to play "That's Good," one of my favorite songs from Oh, No! It's Devo!. They then proceeded to play "Going Under" (from New Traditionalists), a song I've always loved but NEVER expected to hear live! This song had the same effect on me as Skinny Puppy did when they played "Glass Houses": I lost my shit and was flippin' around like a betta fish on crack. All in all, here's the setlist as I remember it in more or less the right order:
That's Good
Going Under
Whip It
Uncontrollable Urge
Girl U Want
I can't get no Satisfaction
Mongoloid
Jocko Homo
Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA
Blockhead
Encore:
Freedom of Choice
Blockhead
I think I'm missing a few in there somewhere, but that's pretty much it. No "Speed Racer" or "Deep Sleep" or "Beautiful World," alas but still a DAMN good show. They've clearly aged--especially Bob Number 2 and Gerald--but they're still in great condition and they will rock your ass! They'll be playing in Cleve Land later this week, and I am sorely tempted to go to that...and the DEVOtional fan con this upcoming Saturday in Akron. I'm almost certainly going to the latter...so, any of you spuds want to come along?
