oneirophrenia: (New Year's Eve)

One of my alltime favorite authors, Cormac McCarthy, has just released a new novel, No Country for Old Men.

Set in 1980 or thereabouts, it follows the harrowing journey of a fellow who stumbles across a heroin deal gone bad on the Rio grande...and 2.4 million bucks in cash. So, naturally, he pockets the cash and hits the trail, trying to survive the psychos on his trail and an aging sheriff. It's an amazingly fast read: I just picked it up and Saturday and I'm already half done with it. But it's McCarthy at his best.

After the limpwristed sell-out tripe of his "Borders Trilogy," ol' Cormac is back in effect with this one. It reads like a cross between Outer Dark and Child of God, just more contemporary and a hell of a lot more violent. It ain't no Blood Meridian by any means, but it's a solid novel with great characters, an awesome plot, and McCarthy's characteristic prose. The writing is thin and dry as a chaparral bush...beautiful in its spareness, but still sharp as a thorn, ready to slice you open and water itself in blood. Fucking incredible.

And honestly...some of it reminds me of The Devil's Rejects. I may need to write an essay on that now.

There will be a MUCH more in-depth review of the book published on www.pegritz.com soon as I finish it, so I'll let you know when that's up if you want to check it out.

Blood Meridian makes the perfect birthday gift, too! That's a wonderful idea.

BTW: I think I'm gonna change my name to John Joel Glanton.
