Since my laptop is still under warranty (I bought it in February), I have to take it to authorized Toshiba repair place to get the hard-drive replaced. Staples won't do anything about it until the warranty is up. Which means that instead of just dropping it off in Uniontown, I've got to find some place in Pittsburgh called SarCom next week and drop it off there. Looks like another day of cancelled classes just so I can drive that motherfucking piece of crap down there and hand it over.

The good news is, though, that it's under warranty: repairs and whatnot are covered by Toshiba. So it's not going to cost me anything--THANK GOD--except for time I don't really have to spare.

Also...looks like I'm going to have to sell the antique and solid-silver commemorative coin collection my father gave me for my fourth birthday so I can afford the drive resurrection. Does anyone know of a good antique or jewelry store that buys old currency?

Have you tried spinrite or R-Studio or any of the other utilities?
If the drive spins up at all one of those two should be able to help you out.

Also, something to keep in mind. The data isn't goign to get any worse. There is time for you to shop around and find the best place to do drive recover if that is what is necessary.

BTW: Things I have done in the past to ressurect dead drives includes going out and buying an identical drive and swaping the drive circuitry. Contacting the manufacturer to see what they recommended. Giving the drive a good hard twist to free up a stuck head. etc etc etc

When you put the drive on the ide chain did the bios recognize the drive at all? Did you make sure to change the jumpers to make sure that you didn't have two drives in master mode?

Coudn't you find something else to sell? A gift from your father you have kept form the fourth grade just doesn't seem right.
