Sony DRM Bullshit Update
Nov. 14th, 2005 10:46 pmI don't know of anyone who has been affected by Sony's XCP "rootkit" shenanigans, but Just In Case, here's a word to the wise (via BoingBoing.net and Freedom to Tinker):
If you find yourself infected, DO NOT use Sony's Web-based XCP uninstaller. According to the data I've found on this so-far, the uninstaller they've offered opens a "huge security hole'--though precisely what this hole is, I haven't yet been able to ascertain. Nonetheless, this information comes from people who are currently working to understand and deal with the problem to help folks avoid further damage to their systems, so for the time being, I'd just take their word for it and err on the side of caution.
I'll post more info as it becomes available, but at present, I say: Better safe than sorry.
