OK, folks, so here it is: Valentine's Day Weekend as seen by Yours Truly.

Quite frankly, a lot of Most Excellent(tm) things happened this weekend--far more than I can really write about in a limited amount of space and time (numerous student papers are, as usual, barking for my attention), so first let me thank all those who made the weekend such a great time with your companionship, conversation, intelligence, wit, humor, music, beauty, and/or beer! You all know who you are. This Bud's for you.*

One thing I do have the time to comment on, though, was yesterday's show at Laga--sadly, the last ever show I will probably ever get to see at that venerable venue. Le sigh. At least the Last Show went over beautifully, and I am proud to say I got to help out with it, however little. Anyway, here's the review:

Curses! are just great. They make me want to get a parrot and a motorboat or a dinghy of some kind, and become a pirate on the Mon River. This was the first time I'd heard them projected through a PA that did not suck, arranged by a very good sound engineer, and I must say that even though I'd been impressed with them before, now I am VERY impressed. I wonder...do they have any recordings out? If not, HPL Laboratories would be down with recording them. Hint hint hint to all respective parties.

Regardless of the fact that all the members of ThouShaltNot are, as the kids these days put it, my homies, they rock regardless--especially when they are rocking it out acoustic-wise with an accordion and a trombone. Peter Schilling done Polish-wedding-band style with accordion, guitar, and acoustic drums is truly one of the coolest things I've ever heard.

The Dresden Dolls are my new favorite band--at least for the next few weeks. If Kurt Weill had been possessed by the spirits of Sylvia Plath and Charles Baudelaire, and had then, on top of that, mustered up enough bitterness to make even the greatest Decadent cringe, you'd get the Dresden Dolls. Simply wow. That two people could squeeze that amount of power and angst out of a digital piano and a drumkit is truly amazing. "Coin-Operated Boy" is my new Jam(tm). (Hint: Folks, feel free to give me quarters to make me do silly things. Dollar bills will be just as welcome, though, too. As will twenties.)

And finally, well, Bella Morte put on a great, amusing show, too--though after The Dresden Dolls, they kind of paled in comparison. But they were fun as always, and played more of their upbeat songs this time rather than their slower numbers, which I generally don't take to all that much. They impressed me to hell and back at the end of their set, though, when they closed out the night with the most awesome cover of the Penguins' "Earth Angel" that I've ever encountered (although Me First and the Gimme Gimmes do a pretty good cover of it, too). Getting to dance to that was so very nice. Made me feel like the Fonz...or some weird, completely uncool, unhip version thereof. Nonetheless, it was great.

And that's it. Now time to grade for the next two hours. To quote ThreeBrain: Aaaand...WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

*Do not take this as an actual endorsement for Budweiser, which is truly one of the worst beers of all time. But saying "This Sapporo's for you" just doesn't have quite the same retrocultural significance as the old Bud slogan, which I'm sure is semiotically cemented into the minds of anyone over the age of 26.

Younger even. I'm only 22 and I remember that slogan!

I've spent all day working on this Mac... *bangs head on desk* I feel your pain. See you next weekend when I will be less drunk (I promise!) and therefore a better conversationalist.

argh

I swear, you must have had a ringer at Laga on Sunday. I kept seeing a slightly taller, slightly blonder version of you wandering around, but despite my attempts I never actually found you. Ack. Chances are, I probably saw you a hundred thousand times and never even realized it. Forgive my idiocy.

The show was fabulous, though.
