The Long-Awaited Weekending Wrapup Effect
Apr. 6th, 2004 02:48 pmSo here we go, folks: the usual weekend roundup in brief.
Friday was a night of much rockamaroll, as first
alternakittyn and I went out to dinner and hit up Kawaii for new Japanian cuteness. I now have a mighty Relax Bear mug and a sheet of awesome little ghost stickers that remind me a lot of the pissed-off spooks from Super Mario Brothers 3. Later on, hit up the electro night that EZ Lou does on Fridays at the Upstage;
ancilla and
beeporama were both guest-DJing, so naturally all manner of freshness was played. Tamara busted out the Goldfrapp and the Kylie, and Lou knocked me to the ground by playing not only the 12" version of Gary Numan's "My Dying Machine" (truly one of the most Pegritzian of all Numan jams) but also The Comateens, "Get Off My Case." Oh, for joy! Truly a night of much bootyshakin'. Plus,
eolh was in from Fairfax, too, so he and I spent some time getting caught up and BSing about our respective students' abilities at proving how stupid humanity is most of the time.
Spent most of Saturday with
raincrystal which was, as always, very pleasant: We wandered about town, went to Borders, tried to scale the Cathedral of Learning but some whackoff apparently tried to set fire to the joint or something since the whole place was full of acrid smoke and the fire alarms were going off, and so forth. That afternoon, we hit up
blackcatbon's senior concert at Duquesne and...holy friggin' crap. I've heard a good bit of Bonnie's music before, of course, and have long known how incredibly talented she is...but that concert did more than merely confirm my expectations--it exceeded them so much.
siliconedreamer and I were quite floored by her choral piece, which we both agreed could and should be the end-credits theme for Exorcist 4, it it ever gets produced. We are soooooooooooooooo going to be sampling that wonderful piece of work. B's voice and compositional skillz are so superior to damnear everyone else's....Damn. That's all I can say. DAMN.
Later that night,
raincrystal and I went to see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which was a very good film: visually striking, well-acted (for the most part...though at times Jim Carrey sort-of slipped up and lost his dramatic edge in favor of his usual rubberfaced fartsmith antics), and surprisingly moving. The thing that really stuck in my mind from the film was the concept of memory redaction and/or erasure. The film prettymuch made the point that erasing painful moments and whatnot from one's life is Not Good(tm) because...well, people learn from their mistakes--and without remembering those mistakes, how can anyone get the benefit of growing from them? I would probably be the first person to jump on memory erasure and wipe 9/10ths of my life out in favor of blissful ignorance...but, chances are, I would eventually grow to regret doing so--much like Phaeton in John C. Wright's Golden Age Trilogy.
I think Marie put it best when, earlier in the day, she said: "The only thing worse than being mugged is not being mugged." That was just brilliant. Funny as hell, taken out of context, but extremely insightful as well. People who live lives of staid, unchanging security and forgetful bliss become soft and mindless. Even the worst, darkest moments of our lives, being surprised in the midst of bliss by the black dog of depression demanding one's wallet and carkeys, give us potential for growth and learning. I say "Word" to that, but still thank the gods for the gift of booze and its ability to make the growth and learning process occasionally less painful.
Sidenote: New Morpheus Laughing tracks are totally in the works. They will crack your skulls open and pick our your brains and deep fry them in tempura batter and feed them back to you!
