Depeche Mode's "Freelove" is, really, the only really good song on the Exciter album (which, despite its title, really isn't very exciting at all)--and it's such a beautiful song. As a matter of fact, I'd say it's probably the loveliest Depeche Mode song of them all. Better even than "Blue Dress." Everything is wonderful about this song: the melody is absolutely gorgeous, the tempo is great for slow-dancing (either vertically or horizontally), the programming and instrumentation are spot on, and the lyrics are just so...lovely. See below.

If you've been hiding from love
If you've been hiding from love
I can understand where
You're coming from
I can understand where
You're coming from
If you've suffered enough
If you've suffered enough
I can understand what
You're thinking of
I can see the pain that
You're frightened of

And I'm only here
To bring you free love
Let's make it clear
That this is free love
No hidden catch
No strings attached
Just free love
No hidden catch
No strings attached
Just free love

I've been running like you
I've been running like you
Now you understand
Why I'm running scared
Now you understand
Why I'm running scared

I've been searching for truth
I've been searching for truth
And I haven't been
Getting anywhere

No I haven't been
Getting anywhere

And I'm only here
To bring you free love
Let's make it clear
That this is free love
No hidden catch
No strings attached
Just free love
No hidden catch
No strings attached
Just free love

Hey girl
You've got to take this moment
Then let it slip away
Let go of complicated feelings
Then there's no price to pay

We've been running from love
We've been running from love
And we don't know
What we're doing here
No we don't know
What we're doing here

We're only here
Sharing our free love
Let's make it clear
That this is free love
No hidden catch
No strings attached
Just free love
No hidden catch
No strings attached
Just free love

A simple song. Not wildly creative like, say, a lyric by Baudelaire or Byron--but very touching, nonetheless.

I believe I may have to cover this. But if I do it, it's just going to be my voice run through a pitchbender and all manner of FX over top of a simple piano melody and maybe a very lo-fi triphop beat.

I am sort of an odd DM fan because SOFAD is one of my favourite albums and not a lot of people liked that one very much.....but yeah, Freelove sort of reminded me of SOFAD era material, and I liked it very much for that.

yeah... i never really understood what might have caused them to name their most minimal and low-key sleepiest album ever, Exciter. i mean. what. the. hell?

is it a joke or what?

but yeah... it's OKAY for an album. if it wasn't DM and their newest ever and all that... i probably would've liked it more.

Yeah...it's an allright album, I *guess*--but after Alan Moulder left after _Violator_, I just haven't thought much of DM stuff in general. There are moments of brilliance, sure, but they are few and far between now....Not like Violator or Music for the Masses--which don't have a single bad track on them.

The loveliest (and alternately most depressing) Depeche Mode song has to be "In Your Room."
Hands Down.

God, I *love* "In Your Room." I've been listening to _Violator_ a lot lately, too, and "Waiting for the Night" has gotten stuck in my head again. Somewhere, on some buried archive of ancient mp3s, I have a really interesting mix of "Waiting for the Night" and NIN's "Something I Can Never Have" that a friend of mine did for a student film. It's so beautiful and, just like "In Your Room," unbearably depressing at the same time....

"Waiting for the Night" is also really, really beautiful. Violator is my favorite Depeche Mode album, hands down, and IMO the best album they have ever created.
"Something I Can Never Have" is possibly the most depressing NIN song ever. But the sad songs on Pretty Hate Machine tend to be more successful and depressing than sad songs on the other NIN albums.

_Violator_ is not only my favorite DM album, but, to me, their best album *period*, as it is the only album they've ever done which manages to catch the "Depeche Mode sound" so perfectly: it's rather dark, at least in terms of the synth sounds used; it's very lush and lovely in terms of melodic content; and it's very varied in tempo and mood--quicker, brighter songs *and* heavier, darker ones.

And as to NIN: Trent's later songs all sound really forced and *trite* to me, as though he's just going through the motions for all the depressive little kids that love his work so much...and laughing all the way to the bank at the same time. THe only later NIN song that I liked a *lot*, really, was "Hurt"...and I liked the Johnny Cash version of that about 1000x better than the original. Because Trent Reznor may be kind of cool, but John Cash is *100% COOL.*

I agree with you about the Cash cover of "Hurt."

I *really* wish it wasn't 2am and I wasn't alone :(

If you are ever lonely, or even just bored, or just need someone to talk to for *any* reason, feel free to call me--it doesn't matter how late or how early....My phone is almost always on and *I* am almost always awake. And I have voicemail just in case.

Last night, I dozed off around 2 just because I had to get up for this dang photoshoot today, but otherwise...well, hell, you know me: I'm 98% nocturnal!

I hope all is well today...or, at least, a *little* better.

I'm feeling much better. I managed to squeeze Santa Cthulhu to death and fall asleep, and today I got to see Kill Bill 2, which was AMAZING.

And tonight I think Mike and I are going to have drunken movie night, so all should be good.
Thanks for the offer to call you whenever I need/want to :)

I hope the photo-shoot went/is going well, and I'm going to go take a shower and watch Bram Stoker's Dracula!

Mmmm. Bram Stoker's Dracula *and* drunken movie night! Sounds like a *most* excellent combination for a day/evening of the proper diversions....

The photo shoot went GREAT! We may now all be suffering fom asbestos inhalation, but that's okay, because the shoot at the old cork factory was *incredible*. As soon as I return home tomorrow, I'll be putting a number of the photos online for your perusal....I do believe you will find them *very* interesting!

_Kill Bill 2_ was just blood amazing, too, wasn't it? Pai Mei. That's all that need be said. Pai Fucking Mei.
