This has got to be one of the most beautiful folk-rock albums I have ever heard. It's...like, Iron & Wine meets Ennio Morricone. Sam Beam's wonderful voice and some guy's Mexican (I think) yodel. Pedal steel, slap bass, banjo, harmonicas, and an old drum kit that sounds ready to fall apart. THIS is fucking country music, people. It makes you wanna drink. HARD. And confounds you with the sheer arrid, pitiless beauty of the malpais. This could well be the soundtrack to Cormac McCarthy's new novel, No Country for Old Men. [livejournal.com profile] mathematical, take note: you need this album RIGHT NOW. Ohyeah, and you need everything by the Handsome Family, too.

Only an EP, alas...but WHAT an EP! There's more awesomeness packed into six or seven songs than most fucking bands manage to jam into their catalogues. The new version of "Dead Man's Will" is so polyphonic and beautiful it literally brought a tear to my eye and made me want to get stone-cold drunk. This song WILL be played at my wake. :)
