The Thrill of Visual Effects

So. Mirrormask isn't playing anywhere near Pittsburgh. Bizarre. I'm sure we'll eventually get it, however, as it is receiving a general release so it should make its way here sooner or later.
In the meantime...Serenity is coming out today. Honestly, I could care less: I hate--HATE--boneheaded space-opera, and that's exactly what Serenity is. If I have to watch another goddamned movie with a telepathic little girl in it who is destined the save the world through her powers or discoveries, I'm going to retch. Nonetheless, the more I read about the film, the more I want to see it--if only for the slew of visual effects. It, like Mirrormask (which is getting SLAMMED for having such a pathetically cliched story), is more about the images and the action than the plot, so if it sticks to that formula it could be really decent. I mean...seriously, who is actually going to Mirrormask for the story? I, and everyone else on earth, just wants to see LIVING BREATHING DAVE MCKEAN ARTWORK! Concomitantly, Serenity is just about goofball space action with lots of bad-assed starships blowing each other up, much like the first few scenes of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.
