I came across this interesting tidbit of astronomical freshness a few months ago, but it's featured in this month's Discover as well, so y'all need to check this out:

Scientists detect 'dark galaxy' 50 million ly from Earth.

It's a galaxy made up of...something--some kind of dense matter that is clearly affecting its neighbors with a lot of gravitational interaction, yet does not emit any kind of radiation. Basically, it's an entire small, but definitely noticeable, galaxy of dark matter.

Could this be the galaxy the Great Old Ones came from? The disembodied brain of HPL sitting on my desk is pondering this even as I write this. Something tells me we've found the concept behind the next Nyarlathotep, the Crawling Chaos album!

On a related note: Who wants to start a betting pool for how long it will take some insane Christian or Scientologist sect to identify the 'Dark Galaxy' as the source of evil in the Universe or, perhaps, the physical location of Hell? (Articles published in the Weekly World News don't count!)
