Last night at Ceremony took a very surreal turn when my friend Robert introduced me to his new room-mate, Nikki, whom I'd seen hanging out with him a few times previously but for some reason never really talked to.

Robert introduced me as "that cranky old English teacher, Pegritz" and immediately his room-mate and I got into a discussion about books--primarily oldskool sci-fi (she's a big Asimov fan) and 19th/early-20th-Century American horror writers, primarily Ambrose Bierce and H. P. Lovecraft. I was certainly impressed by the fact that she recognized some of the authors whom I've worked on, but that's not that unusual, as...well, I'm at Ceremony, surrounded by people who are by default much more likely to have heard of those authors. Anyway, it turns out she's a music/culture reviewer for the City Paper, so next she asked me what sort of music I got into.

She specifically said, "Please say you like Devo."

To which I naturally answered, "DUTY NOW FOR THE FUTURE, woman! What do you think?!"

Turns out she's a complete spud. That was quite impressive, but it got more unusual: she also loves Gary Numan, the Talking Heads, oldskool industrial (she identified herself as a long-time RevCo Pussy Girl, which prettymuch gilded her oldskool credibility right there), folk music & bluegrass, and just about everything else I really dig.

She also loves the films of John Carpenter, surrealist fiction, Dave McKean comicbook covers, robotics, hard science-fiction, silly nonfiction, and General Geek-core Weirdness.

Honestly...I think I may have been surreptitiously cloned. If so, I need to find the lab to ensure proper integrity of the mental scans used to imprint the new clones!

You know, I've finally grown used to the fact that there are other human beings out there (some of them female) who share the same interests as myself, but last night's encounter was still a little surprising. I've met a large number of spuds in the last few months, though, so I guess the age of the New Traditionalists is finally upon us. Still, this is the first time I've ever met someone who's as much of a Devo maniac as myself. That's pretty cool.
