You'll recall Professor Paul Mirecki, the guy from the U of Kansas who created a "creationism as myth" class but then, unfortunately, shot off his mouth and got the class cancelled?

The Christians have struck back in the only way they truly enjoy: beating him up.

Yes. A bunch of worthless rednecks in a pick-up truck, the chariot of the idiotic, pulled him over on a road and beat the crap out of him. He's okay, but he did need to be hospitalized...and the attack was clearly motivated by the class offering, as the thugs who beat him up told him so.

Way to demonstrate Christian virtues, guys. And you wonder why I loathe Christianity so much. And Kansas corn-field rednecks, for that matter.

Honestly, Mirecki's class deserved to be cancelled after he made some inflammatory remarks considering a certain segment of the school's student population--that only makes sense from the University's position. But beating the guy up is the lowest of the low. But, what can you really expect when 98% of the people in this fucking country--not just Kansas, but the entire country--view idiotic violence like this as a perfectly valid means of speaking out against those you disagree with?

Mass graves and crematoria, folks. It may be the only answer.

You know, after I read that story a second time, I began to think the same way--to a small degree. It's definitely a possibility, but considering that this guy is also pretty well-known, apparently, around the area because of the creationism class fracas I wouldn't be too surprised if some yokels found out about him and decided to "let the egghead see what real men are all about." It's certainly possible that he may have pinpointed them as rednecks in order to drum up sympathy for his cause...but it's just as possible that some students who didn't like him because he gave them F's in class a few years before decided to dress up like rednecks and have a go at him. It's pretty impossible to tell one way or another right now, but my money's riding on some local yokels deciding to declare a Christian jihad against the academic atheist. THAT is far more likely, sadly enough.
