The King of Cats

oneirophreniaLately, for some reason, I've been feeling a bit like a fairy-tale character....It might be because of the prismatic prom gown and lacy wings I've been wearing lately*, but I suspect that the real reason is just a concatenated jumble of recent events in The Life of Pegritz. Nonetheless, here's the fairy-tale I've been thinking of mostly:
Once upon a time, there was a family who owned a big ol' scuzzy gray tomcat, who used to lie around by the chimney all day and all night, looking bored mostly, but occasionally gazing up the chimney as though hearing birds or bats up in the flue. Well, one day, the family was gathered about the livingroom of an evening, enjoying one another's human presence, and of course the smelly ol' gray cat was chillin' on the fireplace grate as always. Suddenly, a strange noise came echoing down the chimney--a bizarre, yowly kind of voice proclaiming: "The King of Cats is dead! The King of Cats is dead!" The old tomcat leaped to his feet violently and shouted, "HOLY SHIT! Then *I* am the King of Cats!" and with that he leaped up the chimney and was never seen again amongst humans.
For the life of me, I can't remember where the hell that tale comes from....I think a Clive Barker story, actually--though I don't know why I think that. It's just a goofy little story that's stuck in my head for ages, and lately I feel a bit like flying up a chimney myself. Has a bit of a "Cats of Ulthar" kind of feel to it, too.
*Addendum: Last night, I had a seriously f'ed-up dream in which I was wearing an awesome dress--it was some kind of slinky black material overlaid with pastel pink lace, and was slit well up the thigh. It was Halloween, and for some reason that was the only costume I could come up with. Strange. Regardless of the psychological implications of this bizarre vision, the dress was friggin' HOTT and I wouldn't mind seeing it manifest itself in real life on...well, I can think of a few examples of pulchritude who would certainly do such an outfit justice. ME definitely *not* being one of them.
