Kristi was just horribly frightened by a rug that has lain in the same spot for the last seven months. She spent the last five minutes staring at it as though it magically turned into a quicksand pit.

You're Les Miserables!

by Victor Hugo

One of the best known people in your community, you have become
something of a phenomenon. People have sung about you, danced in your honor, created all
manner of art in your name. And yet your story is one of failure and despair, with a few
brief exceptions. A hopeless romantic, you'll never stop hoping that more good will come
from your failings than is ever possible. Beware detectives and prison guards bearing
vendettas.

Man, I hated this book--which, of course, didn't stop me from reading the whole 1,500,000 of it just to prove to myself that I could do it. But, yeah, I guess that describes me pretty damn well. Except I don't think anyone has ever danced in my honor. If they have, I hope it was the Humpty Hump or the Frug.

I read the abridged version and I love it. The only thing that's cut out are the interminable descriptions of Paris which drag down the book and make it not worth reading.

See, I *should* have read the abridged version because, as far as story goes, even though I wasn't *that* impressed by the tale itself it was still a decent narrative and fairly well-told...but, my lord, the narrative was buried almost entirely in aimless and longwinded descriptions of pure minutiae. The same goes for _Moby-Dick_, a truly moving piece of work but Mr. Melville desperately needed an editor who could restrain him from wasting ten whole pages on digressions concerning species of albatross.

Right, that's exactly what the abridged version cuts out. It's fantastic.

Hmm--then I shall have to seek that out...once I get through The Dante Club and the seventyfive other books I have still waiting on my to-read stack. :)

So...what book are you, then, m'dear?

(Actually, I was sort of expecting to get Frankenstein...since I'm fairly-well obsessed with that book.)
