Fuck the RIAA This Holiday Season!
Nov. 25th, 2005 12:41 amThe RIAA can suck my big, fat, throbbing elbow. I'm sure I've many homies who can agree to that, as well. But yet...you want to give the gift of music this holiday season. What to do?
Simple! Check out FreeCulture.org's RIAA-Free Holiday Gift Guide! Admittedly, it's not that thorough, but it's still a very useful place to start.
From there, proceed on to RIAA Radar, a wonderful site that lets you check to see whether or not a given artist is a member of the Jackoff Brigade. (Sadly, VHS or Beta, since they are signed to Astralwerks now, are. *Le depression*) BUT DO NOT DESPAIR IF YOUR DISCOVER AND ARTIST IS AN RIAA MEMBER OR ON A LABEL THAT IS! Simple go to Amazon.com and order a used copy of whatever work you may be looking for. Buying a CD from a used seller is supporting only that person (and Amazon.com, to a degree), not the RIAA. Yeah, I know...indirectly it sort of is, but you can rest a bit easy knowing that if you were to pick up the limited edition of The Killers' Hot Fuss used at the Record Exchange for $10, that $10 is only going to the Record Exchange and not the RIAA in any way.
Of course, giving the gift of music from indie labels is always a good idea to begin with--and gods know, how many of us love stuff that shows up primarily on indie labels? Show of hands? Damnear everyone. Thought so. 'Cause we're all record nerds here!
Alternately, gift certificates to Emusic.com are always a great idea, too. Hundreds of thousands of completely awesome--and completely DRM-free--mp3s from your favorite obscure weirdo artists available for download at better-than-iTunes prices.
I hope all'a'y'all out there like getting CDs, 'cause that's all I can afford to get/give any of you for Decemberween this year. I doubt this will be a problem. :) If anyone has any particular requests, let me know! I'll do my best to fulfill those requests considering that...well, I have a music library in excess of 80K songs now, and a DeeVamaDee burner. Special X-Mass rockamaroll fun for all!
