Now, we all know that Mr. Pegritz loves him some Lost in Translation and will owe [livejournal.com profile] arvin for-damnear-ever for exposing him to the wonder of it. So, naturally, when I saw that it was available on DeeVamaDee now, I immediately rented it--and will definitely buy it within the next few days, but I wanted to conserve my dollar-signs in the meantime, so I just rented it. Watching the movie was awesome as always, but I've seen it before, obviously, and have commented on it elsewhere....Tonight's lecture of fine filmmaking deals entirely with the DVD extras on the disk.

First of all, the on-the-scenes candid shoots were flatout hysterical--and extremely well-edited. To take random video clips of the filmmaking process and string them together into a perfectly coherent, candid, off-the-cuff documentary isn't an easy thing to do, but whoever edited that sucker together was a bloody genius. The outtakes of Bill Murray and his Making Out in Japanese book are so goddamned funny that I swear I'll end up watching this documentary as many times as I watch the film.

The deleted scenes were interesting, too, but not particularly revolutionary or mindbending with one exception: the scene with Charlotte and the little white droids. I really don't know why that scene was cut. I mean...it's a beautiful fucking scene, it's not overlong (so keeping it in the film wouldn't've bloated the pacing or upset continuity), and it fits perfectly into the initial scenes of Charlotte's culture shock. Plus, any closeup of Scarlet Johansson's face is never wasted!

But, finally...the best of all the extras was...Matthew's Big Excellent Show or whatever it was called. They put the entire "Japanese Johnny Carson" show with Bill Murray on there. Good Lords, the part of the show where Bill Murray has to stick his hands in the box of eels was to die for. Oh my gods was it funny.

So, I'll be buying this sucker tomorrow.

Oh, and one last note: Holy crap--I never knew Sophia Coppola was so goddamned attractive. Yow. Za. Alas, she is married....*le sigh* But her husband is fucking cool as hell (you get to see a lot of him on the behind-the-scenes documentary) and for some reason reminds me a bit of [livejournal.com profile] digitalwank is he was kinda heavyset.
