These're just some notes to myself about something that I've been thinking about since last night. If I ever get around to it, I think it would make a pretty cool movie.

[livejournal.com profile] arvin take note! We could do this if we had a few million dollars">

Possible title: Such Great Heights (taken, obviously, from the Postal Service song, which has been stuck in my head for days now)

It begins with two average, early-20something fellas going to class in the Cathedral of Learning. They have an English class on the 40th floor of the Cathedral of Learning (or whatever the topmost floor you can get access to is). We learn from their dialogue that they're friends, have been for years, and this is their final semester in school. It's a beautiful day and they consider skipping but they just go to class anyway. THANK GOD! While they're in class, suddenly a tremor shakes the Cathedral and everyone's, like, "What the fuck was that?" Then the fire alarm starts going off, so everyone starts leaving the classrooms and down the stairs. One of the guys looks out the window to see if anything's happening and sees some smoke rising up in the distance, but nothing close or obvious, so he and his buddy start down the stairs with everyone else. On the way, they meet another friend who says he thinks a plane crashed on campus or something. Anyway, the crowds packed into the stairs just aren't moving, so the three friends sneak back out onto one of the floors through a nearby door and look out the window. They see police lights flashing in the distance and a lot of people running around on the ground, but they can't tell what's happening. They also notice more fires in the distance. OK, now they start to think that something just isn't right. So they kind of sneak away from the crowds going down the stairs, and just stand in the window to watch.

Suddenly, they hear a really loud metallic screaming sound--and a 747 whips past the Cathedral, spiraling into the ground somewhere near downtown. They look down and the crowds of people on the ground are milliing about like mad and it looks like they're rioting, or someone's attacking them...but they can't really tell, because none of them have binoculars. But the one guy gets a really, really bad feeling and they all decide to run back up to the topmost floor to get away from the ground--because now there are fires and police lights and everything turning up all over the city. On the top floor, they're joined by a girl who has a crush on one of the original two guys. They're standing up there as the building is emptying out, and it looks like people are getting slaughtered on the ground, but they can't tell if the people are being attacked or just going nuts. So they decide the barricade themselves on the top floor of the Cathedral of Learning while the world fucking ends.

See, the horror of the situation is this: first of all, they don't have any radios or binoculars or anything like that, so they can never get a good look at what's happening on the ground--they can just watch the city burning, falling apart, planes falling out of the sky, and general havoc taking over. Sometimes they seem to see huge shapes moving in the distance through the smoke, but they can't tell what they are, and sometimes the earth shakes and there are weird flashes downtown like "gigantic lightbulbs burning out." A few other people join them on the top floor before they barricade the doors and elevators with desks and stuff--including one guy who might've seen something happen on the 20th floor, but he's so out of it he can't do anything more than babble. Some kind of unimaginable HORROR is taking place outside, but they can't find out what's going on....They can only watch it from the top of the Cathedral.

Second of all, for the first few days, they have water--the water fountains are still working--and the power is on. But they have no food. Then the water stops and the lights go out. So they have to try to sneak down to other floors to find some kind of food or water. On the way, they find floors that look like fucking dinosaurs trashed the joint--claw marks and blood everywhere...but no bodies. The one guy has been obsessing about his girlfriend Out There and suddenly supposedly hears her voice from one of the lower flows, and runs off, but no one will go with him because they can't hear the voice and are scared. Later on, when they're back upstairs and barricaded, they hear strange banging on the doors to the stairs but no one's voice--just heavy breathing. After that...they just start to mentally disintegrate.

Eventually...they start killing each other out of starvation and delerium while outside the world is burning down and whatever is happening is destroying EVERYTHING.

Finally...there's only one of them left--one of the two fellas from the beginning. He finally breaks out onto the observation deck at the very top of the tower and the film ends with him just standing there, looking out over the unimaginable, uninterpretable destruction, the fires and ruins reflected in his eyes, and then he jumps.

The End.
