I wish Mitch & Mickey were a real band
Feb. 23rd, 2004 12:45 amYou know...A Mighty Wind is a great film to have on in the background while finishing up the ol' grading process. (
eolh, take note.) I bought the DVD about a month ago, but always had something else to watch instead of it for some reason, but now...well, I can't believe what a great DVD it is. Not only are there tons of deleted scenes (some of which are completely hysterical), but also the complete PNB live broadcast of A Tribute to Irv, as well as three or four of the old '60s-era TV spots that the Folksmen and Mitch & Mickey did as well! I just put those on and went to grading and the process went flying by.
I am more convinced than ever that I am Mitch Cohen, of course, but something else really dawned on me as I was watching this: the music in it is really good. Sure, it was fun to listen to the first time I saw the film, but this time I really focused on it because, hell, I really dig folk music and I wanted to see how well the cast members did at writing it and playing it. I like the Folksmen's songs a lot--"Old Joe's Place" is such a fun jam, and it reminds me of a little dump around my house here called Janet's--but, my god, I really wish that Mitch & Mickey were an actual folk band. Yes, "Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" is a sappy song, but I don't give a damn: it's just such a beautiful tune. I always knew Catherine O'Hara had a great voice (surprisingly enough, I remember Bongwater, and had one of their tapes when I was in highschool or my first two years of college), but Eugene Levy--O he of the Mighty Eyebrows--has a very, very pleasant voice as well...and they compliment one another so beautifully. I should start a write-in campaign to try to convince them to cut an actual album as Mitch & Mickey. That would just rock my world. I mean...the movie soundtrack already has three or four songs by them on it, so why not put together maybe five more and just put out an album? I'd buy the damn thing on sight!
I know they were modelled on Ian & Sylvia--whom I've heard and rather enjoy--but I just love all of the Mitch & Mickey songs.
Ladies and Gents, observe my musical mentality at work: one second I'm crowing about the new Skinny Puppy, the next it's Mitch & Mickey.
And now, to bed. I'm freakin' beat and my pen-hand is aching from scribbling so many damned suggestions for improvement....

Shall I try this again?
