Been listening to a lot of Talking Heads again lately, for truly, they are the World's Greatest Band (as are Skinny Puppy, the Comateens, Chromeo, Gary Numan [who really isn't a band so much as a dude, but still....], Hammerfall, and Malice Mizer)--and I've grown really extra-fond of the song "Making Flippy Floppy." One, the songtitle is really fun to just say at random when you're bored and sitting around--go ahead, try it: just shout out, "Making Flippy Floppy!" right now and see!--but, also, the lyrics are All That(tm) and highly relevant not only to the Pegritzian Situation but also to the World in General these days.

Nothing can come between us
Nothin gets you down
Nothing strikes your fancy
Nothing turns you on
Somebody is waiting in the hallway
Somebody is falling down the stairs
Set someone free, break someone's heart
Stand up help us out

Ev'rything is divided
Nothing is complete
Ev'rything looks impressive
Do not be deceived
You don't have to wait for more instructions
No one makes a monkey out of me
We lie on our backs, feet in the air
Rest and relaxation, rocket to my brain

Snap into position
Bounce till you ache
Step out of line
And you end up in jail
Bring me a doctor
I have a hole in my head
But they are just people
And I'm not afraid
Doctor Doctor
We have nothing in our pockets
We continue
But we have nothing left to offer
Faces pressed against the window
Hey! they are just my friends
Check this out don't be slick
Break our backs it goes like this . . .

We are born without eyesight
We are born without sin
And our mama protects us
From the cold and the rain
We're in no hurry
sugar and spice
We sing in the darkness
We poen our eyes (open up)

I can't believe it
And people are strange
Our president's crazy
Did you hear what he said
Business and pleasure
Lie right to your face
Divide it in sections
And then give it away

There are no big secrets
Don't believe what you read
We have great big bodies
We got great big heads
Run-a-run-a-run it all together
Check it out - still don't make no sense
Makin' flippy floppy
Tryin to do my best
Lock the door
We kill the beast
Kill it!

Duuude, Hammerfall! The greatest power metal band since Manowar! Glad to see someone other than me listens to them. *tips metaphorical hat*

Hammerfall is THE SHIT, man! They are the very *essence* of metal....I was just listening to _Legacy of Kings_ (my favorite Hammerfall album) this morning and it totally got me ready to rock and save the princess in the black castle! Now I need to play Super Mario Bros.

For sheer power-metally goodness, too, have you ever heard anything by Blind Guardian? They did an entire album based around _The Lord of the Rings_, and it's supercheesy, but my GOD can those guys rock it out.

Blind Guardian rock, though whenever I think of Tolkien metal, the first band to pop into my head is usually The Summoning. Try Dol Guldur or Stronghold by them for some of the most listenable black metal out there (though it could be argued that something so synthy and coherent shouldn't be called black metal in the first place).

I *think* I may have heard The Summoning before, actually....When I think of synthy, coherent "black metal" though, my thoughts inevitably turn directly to Dimmu Borgir. I generally don't think much of that particular form of metal, but there *are* a few standout artists that nonetheless really strike me--the lead amongst them being, of course, Opeth, who sound a lot like a heavy-metal version of Pink Floyd with lyrics by Edgar Allan Poe.

Yeah....They *are* pretty addictive, aren't they? I find myself wandering around at random times just telling my coworkers to "Stop makin' flippy-floppy already." They look at me like I've lost it. Which is pretty damned obvious, I would think.
