Holy cow--yesterday was the bomb-diggity, from beginning to end. Sat around for a bit and talked ethics, philosophy, and quantum physics with [livejournal.com profile] popejeremy and [livejournal.com profile] martygreene, bought a bunch of crime-writing books at Barnes & Noble so that I may successfully write that damned vampire serial killer piece I've been working on for a month or two, and then wandered down to the Beehive to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] gwenix before the Mindless Self Indulgence show. She prettymuch convinced me to get involved with Indymedia as a writer, so now I'm gonna be scouring the papers for interesting local stories to write about--mainly grassroots arts and public works projects, because I really don't give much of a rat's ass about activism, but I'm definitely down with DIY cultural efforts.

Anyway, on to the show. HOLY FUCK. We got there just as Tub Ring was getting started and...well, by the second song they did I was prettymuch sold: I simply had to get one of their CDs. Basically, Tub Ring is sort of like The Faint getting assraped by a hardcore punk band. Lots of grinding guitars, pianos, electronic sounds, screaming, and humor--and yet surprisingly intelligent when it comes to lyrics. They may be my new favorite band, and "Invalid" is most definitely My Jam(tm).

Inbetween bands, I suddenly found myself talking to Charissa Hamilton, whom I must've met seven or eight separate times over the past five years, yet forgot about them every time. It was weird, but she's pretty cool, so it was nice seeing her there. I have this weird habit of meeting people, and then forgetting I've ever met them if I don't see them around very much....

Mindless Self Indulgence just...damn. They kick so much ass live. There is something to be said for incredibly energetic synth-punk bands: their singer was flying all over the place like a monkey on crack, climbing up into the rafters, bopping around, and just generally being insane. I haven't seen such a powerful live show in ages....

Afterwards, went over to Ceremony to see Matt spin one last time and, man, he kicked my ass. Busted out two oldskool Skinny Puppy tracks, "Spasmolytic" and "God's Gift (Maggot)" and Front Line Assembly's "Final Impact," so there was much rocking. I got to see a lot of my old friends, including [livejournal.com profile] shimmer_star and [livejournal.com profile] dustin23 and [livejournal.com profile] benhob. There was also some weird random drama, but nothing to major--just the kind of thing that makes you roll your eyes and shrug, but that's okay.

Met up with Bonnie there, too--it was her birthday. We left after a bit, though, and went down to Tom's Diner for coffee and much great conversation. If anything, the non-musical highpoint of the night was just sitting with her at the diner and talking about everything from old movies to machinery. That was very nice.

Then I drove home and went to bed, because I'm gonna be grading papers most of today. Might take a break to see The Last Samurai, but for the most part, today is Bizzy Day.

We out.

Yes, last night was great. Much conversation to be had, and the drinks I got were unusually strong. Which was great at first, but then I forgot who I gave my car keys to!

I'll take your advice and see elf when I get the chance; however, i'm going for Return of The King! Tom == geek

Hell yeah! I'm totally on deck for _Return of the King_. I saw a somewhat longer-than-usual preview for it at _The Last Samurai_ today and it just made me drool.

last night started out really rough, but thanks for hangin out with me on my birthday.

it was a long hellish day of teaching forever and then singing a concert (I just got back from my last one, and Gwen came:) and I almost didnt go out at all. I knew certain parties would be in attendance and also I could barely keep my eyes open after draining myself onstage till by vocal cords almost bled. Dante and Deena dragged me to ceremony despite my futile efforts to stay at home.

the evening did end in a drunken stupor, at least for myself, quick sobering up, and thankfully happy conversations of machinery and music, so once again Derek, danke and many thanks also go out to all who bought me birthday drinks!

*I* am certainly glad you came out last night, and I'm VERY glad I helped to brighten up your day! Booze always helps a bit, but I think late-nite coffee does more.... :)
