So, for the last week or two or three, in my dribs and drabs of spare time, I've been very half-assedly working on some goofy little dance songs built primarily from old analog drum machine sounds and tones, textures, and blips'n'bleeps taken from old Ataris. Nothing creative in the slightest, really--just fun, bouncy, mindless dance music full of old videogame noises. In other words, just like anything else out there called "IDM" these days! So, I needed a name for the project, and while listening to the Pulsars the other day I remembered that they had a cool cartoon robot on their album cover whose name was Retar-D2--the perfect name for this goofy house-meets-IDM crap!
So here's the first track I've finished: Retarded Atari 1985. It's about, uhhh, 6 minutes long I think, and highly-repetitive, and dumb--but really fun. I think it took me, like, thirty minutes all told to make it....
All of the percussion sounds are from an old analog 909, and most of the rest of the noises are filtered, treated, and edited Atari noises. The strings and the weird sinewave synthlead I just found on some old Sonic Foundry sample library that somebody gave me. Simple, yet effective. I'm thinking of digging out my old copy of Analog-X's SayIt--a Windows-based speech synth that emulates the old Speak n' Spell phonetics--in order to add some "vocals" to the song later. They'll mostly be lines like "Retarded Atari" and "Missile Command is sexy" and "Yar will finally have his much delayed revenge", and I think they'll send the dopiness quotient of the song through the damn roof.
siliconedreamer,
digitalwank, and all you other synth-dorks out there take note--you may actually like this stuff. :)

Date: 2004-03-03 07:32 am (UTC)Seriously, man, if you want to kick out the robotic voices with the SidStation...I am SO THERE! We should seriously consider hooking up sometime in the next few weeks and just doing completely mindless early-80s robofunk. I mean, just because Retar-D2 is present just *me* doesn't mean it always HAS to be!
